The Wowster regrets that films are becoming more and more like comic book movies
A slightly odd trend is beginning to appear in the cinema towards what I call comic book movies.
Let me explain.
They are movies which have a strong action motif, minimal characterisation and very simplistic scripts. And usually the protagonist is a woman who goes about beating men up.
This eclectic mix goes to make up a movie designed to appeal to the teenager in us, not to mention the masochistic and feminine side of men who would like to be beaten up by a woman.
As films they are okay, but it is not quite clear why they are being made in the first place.
Take Haywire a movie with such star turns as Ewan McGregor, man of the moment, Michael Fassbender and Michael Douglas, mainly acting as punchbags for a vengeful woman. All of this brilliantly directed in terms of the action by Steven Steven Soderbergh.
But the final result is a fairly predictable and as such somewhat boring movie after the second dude has been bumped off.
Is it a director’s conceit to show how good an action movie he can make? If so, you win, Steven, but don’t let it happen again, once is enough.
The best parts. Enjoy.
The Wowster is the pen name of Nathan Goldberg, wowdewow publisher and founder, who has no desire to be beaten up by a woman. Honest.
Do feel free to comment on whether you think there is a sustainable market for such movies?
