The Wowster on the unexpected pleasure of reading about Steve Jobs revealed

It was with no great enthusiasm that I bought Steve Jobs: The Exclusive Biography by Walter Isaacson

I didn’t quite expects a snow job (sorry, no pun intended) but my hopes were minimal when I discovered that Jobs chose the cover.

I’ve not quite finished it yet, but I was so wrong it is a riveting read whether you are a Jobs fan, a business devotee or just someone who loves a great bio.

Nothing is kept under wraps, apparently apart from the cover, Jobs insisted he would not interfere and that is the way it turned out…Steve Jobs revealed, no holds barred.

Isaacson uncovers a paradoxical genius who could at once be a charming charismatic, a smouldering bully, a cold, uncaring man obsessed with his own cutting brand of control freakery.

How great was he? In this reviewer’s opinion, he was one of the business titans of this and the last century. Solidly grounded in technology and fixated by perfection, he personified the complete package, famed for his marketing chops and bringing out spectacular products.

Apple Mac, Next, Pixar, iPhone, iPad, his triumphs, even his failures, read like a roll call of products that more than any others changed the way we are.

And what was in it for Jobs, a neurotic man who needed respect and love rather that material wealth? It was the recognition of his achievement and that is what will ring down the ages.
