The Wowster can’t understand why so few people seem to have heard of Natalie Merchant

She dominates the world of song with a brilliance of voice that both draws you in and haunts you with her delivery and lyrics.

No one quite does it like Natalie Merchant in terms of atmosphere and interpretation

Yet so relatively few people have heard of her. It strikes me as a mortal sin against music and a criticism of narrow taste that like a razor can cut the throat of your cultural experience.

There are so many examples of this songbird’s work that one is at a loss to know where to begin.

One of my favourites is Carnival, a number that speaks of the unbounded spirit and sheer optimism of Merchant, who she is and why she should be more known than she seems to be…
