Beware Movie Critics

Put not your faith in movie critics, warns The Wowster

I am beginning to think that going on your instinct rather that paying any attention to movie critics (including me) is the best way to find an enjoyable film.

After seeing a few movies recently disregarded by critics but which I thought were rather good, my advice is beware movie critics.

Take Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, a new movie starring Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock with a stand out performance by Thomas Horn as a boy ravaged by the death of his father in the 9/11 attacks on the Trade Centre.

Critics have slammed the film as being mawkish and unconvincing. Watching television recently, I saw one critic tear into Horn for being such a pain in the arse.

I don’t get it. This is a fine film, lit up by strong ensemble acting not least by Horn who dominates the screen from start to finish.

Yes it is sentimental but that is only a flaw if the sentiment is phoney and it certainly isn’t in this case.

Rather it is one boy’s search for understanding why his father died in such a random and inexplicable way,

If but we knew.

Have a peek and decide for yourself
