The Feast of Cholent

The Wowster on the Jewish Feast of Cholent

A facebooker’s comments about her mother’s burgers brought to mind my mother-in law’s famed cholent, truly a feast for the poor.

It would arrive like clockwork on a Friday evening and went on to feed our faces over the weekend.

The idea was to simmer the dish so it was ready for the Shabbat evening and the Saturday evening to avoid cooking.

It did just that, delicious and filling, but I suspect borne of her poverty as much as by religion, scraps saved from the previous few days.

But the memory I hold dearest is sitting round the candle lit table in her tiny Glasgow flat partaking of not so much a religious imperative, rather adding to the spice of life.

The Wowster is the pen name of Nathan Goldberg, wowdewow publisher and founder. To his regret, he no longer partakes of cholent.

Do feel free to comment on when last, if ever, you had cholent.
