SEA SALTS

A Scottish Poem by Emma McCrae.

If you should leave I will not allow
time for cleansing tears.
I will sit by an ocean and throw
stones at the relentless tide
beating on the sand.

At night, I will sit alone and remember
your body, your lips and your eyes.
I will write poems about your smile
and your compassion for others
but not for me.

I will only sit by that ocean
and give my soul to the sound
of waves against waves.
Never will I return to witness
another’s hand in yours
walking, breathing, loving.
