The Wowster on the internet freedom blackout in protest against anti-piracy laws.
Sopa (the United States Stop Online Piracy Act) could be in hot water.with its blatant attempt to damage internet freedom.
One of the world’s most famous websites, Wikipedia, has gone offline with the explanation: Imagine a world without free knowledge.”
Reddit and the blog Boing Boing have done the same although Twitter have desisted.
I’m not sure about this policy but I do admire it and support it all the way.
The Act’s opponents believe the legislation could fatally damage a free and open Internet. that I definitely agree with.
The legislation would allow Sopa and the Protect Intellectual Property Act to seek court orders requiring search engines not to feature websites in breach of the Act.
Says Wickipedia owner Jimmy Wales: : “Proponents of Sopa have characterised the opposition as being people who want to enable piracy or defend piracy.
“But that’s not really the point. The point is the bill is so over broad and so badly written that it’s going to impact all kinds of things that, you know, don’t have anything to do with stopping piracy.”
Wowdewow has decided to keep on publishing and promoting the campaign against this censorship simply because we’re too small to make any difference and believe we can do more by highlighting this threat to freedom of speech.
The reality of the situation?
