The Card Players Come Up Trumps

The Wowster on the world’s most expensive painting…Cezanne’s The Card Players

A couple of peasants playing cards. So Cezanne couldn’t resist and ended up drawing one of his most loved paintings…The Card Players.

Now the Gulf Kingdom of Qatar has dipped into its piggy bank and bought the painting for a new world record of £160million.

In doing so, they beat two of the world’s leading dealers to the masterpiece.

The price overwhelms the previous world record of £89 million for Jackson Pollock’s painting, NO 5 1948, bought in 2006.

It is one of a serious of five pictures of Provencal peasants playing cards that are so highly rated they are often described as ‘human still life’.

Until a year ago  the owner of the world record painting, the late Greek tycoon, George Embricos, refused to part with it but as in painting as in life everything has a price and he decided to sell.

The Wowster is the pen name of Nathan Goldberg, wowdewow publisher and founder.

Do feel free to comment on whether you think any painting is worth that amount of money?
