Scots with everything

Ed Hart turns his laser eye on the Scots media insecurity.

There is a crazy rationale to the Scottish press and media overkill. Apparently, the Scots need to be reminded of who they are at least once a day.

It is easy to read a pro-nationalist political subtext into this. However, you won’t find it on the sparsely watched BBC Alba, which has a more imaginative take on the issues than its mainstream counterparts.

Instead, it is the BBC, STV and broadsheet newspapers that concentrate on a free navel with every gaze. There seems to be an unspoken alliance at work in this Scots media insecurity that believes that the Scots are only really interested in themselves.

Scottish bin

So, what do we get? Programmes on Scottish mountains, Scottish fauna, Scottish landscapes, Scottish inventors, Scottish midges, Scottish Scottishness. If it comes in the press it is delivered in the form of a wall-chart or supplement which presumably goes straight into the Scottish bin.

There is nothing fragile about Scotland or its people. You don’t develop a culture that withstands everything that is thrown at it only to collapse because The Herald, The Scotsman, Scotland on Sunday et al failed to issue a wall-chart.

In 2009, STV ran a Greatest Scot competition. Don’’t names like Baird, Bell, Dunlop, Fleming, Hume, Kelvin, Macadam, Mackintosh, Smith, Telford, Watt… resonate enough? The thing that hasn’’t dawned on these bampots is that the Scots know who they are.

Brazen

Scotland has its own legal system, it own education system, its own health service and a degree of autonomy, which if it so chooses, can be cashed in for full independence.

Whether it does so or not, will depend not on brazen, idiotic propagandising but on a perception that the best interests of the nation lie outside the UK.

The irony in all this is that it is the TV and newspapers that that go into Scots overkill to struggle to assert their identity – the Scots already have one.

Do you think the Scots media overdoes it? Or can’t you get enough of it?

Ed Hart, wowdewow’s attack dog, must not be fed a wall chart.
