Euro drones

Chris Leeming is underwhelmed by the Euro Song Contest 2011 – and that’s before he’s even heard it

It’s time to celebrate, music fans. Boy band Blue are to be the UK’s entry to the much respected Euro Song Contest 2011.

In doing so they will be the first ‘established’ band to enter for the UK since 1997 when Katrina and the Waves led us to victory with Love Shine a Light.

Yes, apparently Blue are still recognised as an ‘established’ band – I thought they made a career out of Never Mind the Buzzcocks appearances and (presumably) community centre openings these days. To be fair to the boys, in their ten year career they have sold over 13 million records and won two Brit Awards.

Obviously this is an attempt to boost their profiles as they aren’t exactly topping the charts right now. But considering last year’s contestant, Josh Dubovie (who?), came last with a shocking 10 points it’s hard to see this as a success story waiting to happen.

The BBC are following their Eurovision story for a documentary to be aired in April (I’m guessing late at night…on BBC 3) which will obviously be an attraction for them. But can the singers of If You Come Back really sway the rest of Europe, who let’s be honest, hate the UK?

One of the boys, Duncan James, said it is great to be taking part in something that is a British Institution. Perhaps he hasn’t noticed that interest in the show has been waning the last few years, with the quality of the acts and the voting practices of certain countries (Greece and Cyprus for example) persuading even Terry Wogan to quit commentating on the competition?

Good luck boys, you are going to need it.

Can the Euro Song Contest revive Blue’s career – or will Eurovision cost them what credibility they think they have left? Comments welcome
