Andy Mclaren enjoys the latest Scottish film release. A Spanking In Paradise was described by the Edinburgh International Film Festival’s senior programmer Niall Grieg Fulton as a ‘dirty, dangerous and often sometimes hilarious walk on the wild side’. It received its world premier at EIFF 2010 and audiences were hooked. The film was awarded with two ‘Trailblazer’ awards and received a much coveted slot as the festival’s closing film.

A rollocking comedy about life in a brothel. In Glasgow.

Recently released on DVD and Blueray it is a story about a recently qualified and impressionable young human rights lawyer (Justin) going to work in his Uncle Rabs brothel while he waits on his American visa application being processed. Justin is drawn into a world alien to him and quickly becomes absorbed and, a part of the shady dealings, of his Uncle Rab, of the sauna and of the dodgy punters.

Its a low budget production which really works with the atmosphere of the film. Its very gritty but also has some brilliant comedy moments. The characters are brilliantly played, Curry Tom, an acid freak, hilarious hookers and angry bodybuilders will take you on a 94 minute jaunt through Edinburgh’s darker and more sordid side.

IFC films in America wisely snapped up the rights to the film for US and International distribution. IFC are independent film distributors and know their market having previously also snapped up the rights to Michael Moore’s Fahrenheit 9/11 and Steven Soderbergh’s Che, to name two.

Written and directed by Wayne Thallon it is now available to buy. Highly recommended.
