Nathan Goldberg reports on Amsterdam’s urban green growth.
Amsterdam is known for its love of pot. The type you smoke.
This writer’s favourite city, in the words of the song, is also famous for its flowers.
Now a new urban green business idea combines the pot with the flowers. In others words, a business aimed at urban gardeners (gawd, what a long winded and unfunny intro – Editor).
Mark van der Geest has opened up a store called Urban Green to cater for that market with plants pots accessories.
Garden centres just don’t offer such things to those of us limited to tiny plots and balconies. This despite the growth in urban gardening as space becomes more scarce and green issues more prevalent.
Also on offer at Amsterdam’s Urban Green are stackable tables and chairs for the balcony. The company in partnership can even offer to install green roofs and vertical gardens.
Van der Geest hopes his urban green business idea will encourage people to make their cities greener and grow their own food from balconies and rooftops.
It won’t be long until that encouragement is not longer needed as food costs spiral.
Are you a green urban dweller? Or are you a country escapee who never wants to see green again?
Nathan Goldberg, wowdewow chief executive, has an apartment but no green, far less garden of any type, has been reported there to date.
