Vivian Luu recommends playtime as a social media strategy
“Live a little… and make it social”
If I could compile a list of social media FAQs for my friends AND my employers, this would be the cherry on the sundae:
“There are so many social tools out there. How do I know which ones to use?”
The roster of social networks and social tools will continue to grow in the foreseeable future. The sane way to approach them is not to strategize, but to simply play with social goodies as they reach out to you.
There already exists social “basics” on the Web, such as membership on Twitter and Facebook. Google+ may be the next big thing (but it’s too soon to tell). These tools are at the center of a web of social tools. Is this overwhelming? Definitely.
Can it be transformed into a process of discovery and creativity? Absolutely.
Start with your friends–which tools are they using?
Signing up for services is easier than ever. Play with the network–a lot. Be creative. Try-out what others are doing on the network, and test out your own system. Check out Pinterest, for example: Some users are customizing their dream wardrobe with it while others are building a resource catalog for school and work.
If you don’t like it, dump it.
The high volume of social goodies on the Web allows you to “break up” with services if they’re just not what you’re looking for without shedding a tear. That’s something to drink and possibly tweet to.
