The Wowster reflects on the business end of the question whether Scotland can go it alone independently.
It is often said that Scotland would find it difficult to go it alone if it gained independence.
To say the least, this assertion is dubious.
As is the one about the rest of the United Kingdom being better off without the Scots.
Again, as a supporter of UK unity, I regret to say that assertion is nonsense.
Of course, the seried ranks of UK politicians lining up to show Salmon who’s boss have made much of the business end of the argument, saying if Scotland goes AWOL they will suffer.
Two points worth considering:
Although the jury is out on the oil question given the way its price fluctuates and it certainly isn’t as lucrative as Nationalist would make up, it would seem the balance is in the SNP side of the sheet.
A less central issue is that of wind farm industry where most of it is in Scotland, this alone could be a significant asset.
In summary there is no question Scotland can go it alone economically and all the signs are politically and from a business point of view that the United Kingdom would be the losers.
Alas.
The decisive argument is can either side flourish by splitting up as mu8ch they can do by cooperating?
The answer is no.
