The Wowster is agog at the news of what is the world’s most expensive city.
The captital of Angola is not the first candidate that springs to mind as the world’s most expensive city.
Potholed and scarred by years of civil war, the city is without any glamour and half of Angolans live on £2 a daay.
So why so expensive?
Well mainly because of scarcity brought about by decades of civil war. From that has come a supplyside problem So the demand allows huge price tags.
For example:
A house can fetch a rent of $10,000a month.
A basic meal con cost $50
A hotel room can be $400 a night
A kilo of imported tomatoes can be an unbelievable $16 a kilo.
As the country’s basic infrastructure begins to improve the prices are coming down but they have a long way to go before Luanda loses the unwanted tag of being the most expensive city in the world amid a sea of slums and near starvation.
Inside Luanda…
