The Wowster mourns the undermining of education
When the welfare state was founded in the UK in the late 40s one of the great leaps forward was the birth of an egalitarian education system.
The idea, though not entirely successful, was that any child could look forward to a full education whereby money would not be a factor.
Okay what happened was not perfect. Private schools, grammar schools and the consequential affect on comprehensive schools diminished the dream.
But it was far from a failure and was looked upon as a shining light in the search for a better educated person.
All of that is becoming ancient history with the introduction of paying for further education. Latest statistics say that more than 10% have dropped out.
There are arguments to say that all that has happened is a natural correction thanks to fee paying,
That is absurd. What has happened is that we have taken a razor to our throat in a world which is governed by the knowledge economy.
More importantly we have turned out the lights of people who could have made the difference this country so badly needs.
Pink Floyd shedding their light on the debate. Bad education is worse than none.
