The Wowster reckons that The Artist is probably one of the best movies ever
Without a shadow of a doubt The Artist is the pick of the movies for 2011, perhaps one of the best movies ever.
But a wow warning, as you leave the cinema you are not quite sure why. To be honest, I’m still not entirely sure, except to say that it will both delight and haunt you.
Cue pitch. The movie tells the classic tale of the collision of destinies one on the upstairs and one plunging down.
Told in the silent language of a 20s silent movie it grips throughout as Jean Dujardin and Berenice Bejo play star crossed romantics under the direction of Michael Hazanavicious, one clinging to the sinking ship of silents the other jumping on the bandwagon of talkies.
In combining the strands of Singing in The Rain with a Star is Born set in 20s monochrome, this is a one-off the like of which we are unlikely to see again.
Which is a pity, but like all genuine masterpieces is sadly inevitable.
Just one of the great sequences…
