The Wowster on detecting early signs of autism
It may well be possible to detect autism in children’s brainwaves at a much earlier age of around six months.
Researchers believe that behaviour symptoms can be identified between the first and second birthdays of a child and could help treatment.
It is believed that one per cent of children have an autism disorder and it affects boys more than girls. There is no cure but education and behavioural programmes can help.
Babies were tested for eye contact with different pictures looking at and away from the baby. Also sensors were attached for to detect different types of brain activity.
There was far less difference in brain activity of babies who did develop autism from those who didn’t.
