There’s always a catch

Nathan Goldberg believes he has caught out Facebook doing something good, Facebook Places in UK, then…..

Good old Facebook, They’ve come up with an idea that can save you money while you shop.

Or so it would seem.

Places Deals allow you from this week to get rebates at stores such Starbucks, Debenhams and Argos. The devil however may be in the detail.

The service logs a member’s location and then finds money off deals in their area. The idea is that it can be shared with friends.

However, it can be complicated as women say on Facebook when discussing their relationships. By the way there is a lot of adultery stuff going on in Facebook and the reason is… (will you PLEASE get on with it! – Editor)

It’s when you get on friends’ deals it gets more complicated. It involves tagging a number of friends to share savings.

Also ‘loyalty deals’ require lots of check ins similar to a punch card.

The Facebook Places in UK has just arrived  in Europe,  and also includes Spain, France, Germany, Italy and Spain.

Joanna Shields, Facebook’s vice president in Europe warbles about it being a powerful experience that combines technology and special deals in an original way.

No so, says Dan Olds, an analyst. He explains there are many reasons why people may not want to use this Facebook experience. Main reason is that you would be putting too much information out there. That you’re not at home for instance.

Oh bugger it, there’s always something, isn’t there? Just when I thought Facebook were acting in the public good.

Thanks Dan.

Do you feel that there is a risk in Facebook Places in UK or it’s one worth taking if the offers are good? Comments please.

Nathan Goldberg, CEO of wowdewow, would leave all the doors and windows open to get to a cut price deal.
