The Wowster reports on a holy war over religion and politics
A holy war has kicked off in the UK over the part religion should play in politics.
On one side are the religious zealots who claim the secular lot are getting too big for their boots.
On the other, are the so-called militant secularationists who recently successfully banned prayers at a council meeting.
The concept of over-muscular secularisation was started by the Pope who claimed it was a danger to the world as we know it.
Following hot in papa’s footsteps was Baroness Warsi, muslim cabinet minister and chair of the Tory Party who went to the Vatican and preached against the new godless.
Amid the nonsense, is a genuine fear that Britain is creeping towards a secular society. If only.
Enter James Conroy, professor of religious and philosophical education of Glasgow:
“Economic well being on its own isn’t enough. But it’s not true there’s no religion in public life.”
He can say that again with unelected bishops sitting in the House of Lords with a political say. The prof says they have little influence.
Then why have them is a question that might be asked among many others?
