A Sexist Word?

The Wowster on whether the word babe is a sexist word

Today’s question is babe a sexist word? Does it matter? And if so, so what?

That’s the attitude of most people in Brighton to a bus driver rapped for calling a woman babe.

In that part of the UK, it is normally taken as a cheeky complement at worst, never as an insult.

But one passenger complained and it seemed the roof fell in. Now the drivers have been warned to watch their language and certainly never again let the word babe escape their lips.

It seems to this reporter that while the word babe is a rather silly one to describe a woman, it is usually a complement and should raise a smile not a warning.

As should the expression get a life when applied to Brighton transport.

What would they have said…

The Wowster is the pen name of Nathan Goldberg, wowdewow publisher and founder. He doesn’t tend to favour the word babe, more a honey sort of guy…
