Search for Truth

Published on January 14, 2012 by   ·   No Comments

Bring on the clowns. The wowster reports of an elusive search for truth.

To be persuasive, we must be believable; to be believable we must be credible; to be credible, we must be truthful.

To the backdrop of those words of Ed Murrow that define honest journalism, the clock is ticking for the Leveson Inquir yin its search for truth as it trundles to its conclusions on the standard of the British tabloid press, an oxymoron to say the least.

It is the turn of newspaper luminaries, clowns to a man,  to make their case with the forthcoming appearance of Paul Dacre, Editor of the Daily Mail, being the next big turn.

But what will it all lead to. Will anything change when Leveson reports in nine months time. The answer must be no when the real threat is one of survival to many of the newspapers.

Tabloids by definition are not purveyors of truth but what they can get away with which is usually almost anything. A girdle of new regulation is not going to change that unless there is a significant change in freedom of the press.

The only thing that might whip newspapers into line is if there are a few notable incarcerations of some of the main players.

While that is not out of the question it hardly looks likely coming from a police force that has been critically compromised to the extent that no charges have been levelled at Rupert Murdoch’s son  who misled the inquiry.

Only sacrifices at the alter of truth and decency will make any difference and that as Ed might have said would be the real deal.
