What Would You Have Done?

The Wowster asks what would you have done if your life was in danger?

I fell off the ship, is now the excuse of the world’s most famous coward, Francesco Schettino, skipper of the ill fated Costa Concordia.

Whether or not that’s true is open to debate although he had no lifejacket on which gives his explanation some credence.

The point is what would you have done in his circumstances?

The ship is in uproar, the crew are deserting, there is very little you can do, would you have stayed even though it would have been mainly symbolic?

I’m sure some of us would if only to give reassurance, but if you feel you are about to die might you might have been tempted to at least consider getting off the ship.

The skipper was clearly not a man of courage, but is that the same thing as saying he was a coward if he felt his life was in danger?

I don’t think so, he was an idiot for navigating the ship as he did for which he will pay a heavy price, but in getting off the ship he was exercising a Falstaffian discretion we all have in staying alive and which some might agree in certain circumstances is the better part of valour.
