Nathan Goldberg hates offices and doesn’t much like working from home. He explains why he prefers cafes.
Many years ago I decided I hated working from offices. Then a few years ago, I decided I hated working from home.
You may well ask if I just hate working, full stop. Yes but.
I do like working from cafes. Yummy. An expresso shot and iced water and I’m anyone’s.
I take out my iPad and I start to work. Well, after a fashion. You see there are so many distractions. Darn it…
For instance the cafe I haunt is great. It has everything you need to put you off working. It would be number one in anyone’s slacker’s guide.
It’s called the Beanscene. I call it the Beanie. Full of all sorts. Women with buggies and very small children. People pouring over a laptop, intent on something or other.
No one seems to notice anyone else. Which is odd, but it is the way it is.
The staff are engaging too. They are very young and no one appears to be in charge.
Tables are left uncleared, but the waiters (to give them a posh title) are awfully nice and their chatter is another great excuse for doing no work.
The music is to die for. A great compilation, something for everyone. And the seating has grand old brown sofas that have seen better days. You only sit there if you’re slacking.
I know it’s just sodding old Glasgow, and you can feel you’re in granny’s front room. But it works for me and I try to run wowdewow from there.
Post Script: Truth is I am weakening. I now have a little bit of an office and I actually go to it. But not for long, just don’t tell anyone.
Well do you like working from cafes or do you think this is just a slacker’s guide for lazy folks? Comments welcome.
Nathan Goldberg is the hard working CEO of wowdewow. Now can we have that rise you promised?

Dont be lazy – Hard work spotlights the character of people: some turn up their sleeves, some turn up their noses, and some don’t turn up at all.
