Exercise for Diabetics

Alia Haley on exercise for diabetics

Regular exercise for diabetics has the power to control diabetes better than medicines and insulin injections.

It helps…

in losing weight and maintaining a healthy body, which is very important for a person with diabetes.

in reducing blood glucose level, which means you need fewer medications to control your diabetes.

Diabetics do not need to visit a gym to keep  fit. Simple exercises at home and an active lifestyle is enough to check diabetes.

Activities like walking, swimming, dancing, playing, running, cycling and climbing stairs are the different types of aerobic exercises that people with diabetes can do.

Strength training helps to burn fat and tone the muscles. As the name suggests, these workouts increase your strength and stamina.

Stretching exercises are also a good way to remain flexible and reduce stress. They help to manage diabetes better.

If, by any chance, you are not able to carry out the above exercises, simple changes in your day to day activities can also help you to control diabetes. Some small changes that give great results are:

1. Walking while talking on the phone
2. Playing around with kids
3. Activities like gardening and cleaning the house

When to avoid exercises:

Listen to your body and avoid exercises in certain circumstances like if your blood sugar increases to 300 mg/dl, if there are ketones in your urine, if there is numbness in your legs or if you are short of breath.

The best exercises…
