“YOU really need to be a criminal or a pervert to shock me.” So says the sun king of the shoe Christian Louboutin – who is to soon celebrate the 20th anniversary of his luxury label.
Prices start at £600 but 600,000 have been sold this year so far. How to spot them? Their trademark red sole of course. Yves St Laurent has stated that its late creator did that 40 years ago and that’s its sole motivation in taking Louboutin to court.
If that sounds like nothing more than a textbook fashion spat, isn’t there something equally tiresome about the cult of the luxury high-heeled shoe? It bears such a one-note brand of sex appeal, screams of Trying Too Hard and looks wrong beyond formalwear. It’s such a cliche!
Photographed, the artistry involved is laudable. In the real world, the wearer cannot move. It’s like trying to sport a sculpture or a piece of architecture is it not? The sheer constriction isn’t the hallmark of style. It’s the ultimate badge of a fashion victim.
We’re all adults here and if that’s what you like why apologise? Just don’t expect the rest of us to walk in your shoes.
