I DONT LIKE film director Lars Von Trier. He made an anti semitic remark about Jews, I am one and that was that.
Uber Jew hater
I promised I wouldn’t go to see any of his movies. He is a great director but no great loss, although I do enjoy the work of maestros like uber Jew hater Wagner.
But Lars Arse, as I now call him, brought out a movie masterwork recently, so I decided to give him the benefit of the doubt, given he had said he was just joking. Then I heard he had committed another infraction against the chosen people and I wondered?
Publicity seeking?
But hey he might have been misquoted second time around, or just publicity seeking, well mightn’t he?
So off I went and saw a remarkable movie that blew me away, I would have gone to see it if he had been in charge of Auschwitz, it was so brilliant.
The movie is called Melancholia. Never has a film opened so grippingly, given away the ending and held you enthralled throughout.
Perfection of Kirsten Dunst
It has so many themes, end of days, family dysfunction, But what really grabbed me was its take on melancholia.
Kirsten Dunst (pictured) plays the depressed woman to perfection, she sees the end of days, which sends her spiraling to self inflicted destruction on what should have been the happiest day of her life, her wedding day.
Do see this for all of that and the awesome rendering of a planet crashing into ours. Not to be missed.
A fabulous trailer of a fabulous movie…
Nathan Goldberg, wowdewow publisher-editor, will be barred from all synagogues for this infraction. Which would hurt, except although he’s a Jew, he’s also an atheist.
Have you seen this movie masterwork, if so what do you think? Your opinion most welcome in readers comments below.

My dislike of Lars Von Trier predates these remark by some years . I think his wok is AWFUL and am at a loss to see why so many art house fans praise him to the heights
He has been somehow heaped in with masterpiece Festen which is nothing to do with him,
Having said that, why do I now want to see this film?
I totally agree, Melancholia is a masterwork.
Von Trier (the director) and Von Trier (the person) are two very different characters, and I always like to differentiate the two. As I do with many other directors, (Polanski is a great director, as a person…)
I didn’t feel an emotional connection with the peice, as I did with others such as Antichrist and Breaking The Waves, however, that’s just the point of the film: to stir up a sense of detachment.
It’s a very self indulgent peice on Lars’ part; it is well documented that he has suffered from severe depression in the past, it could be said that this is a person reflection. However, the film itself very impersonal.
I really wanted to have an emotional connection to Claire, however, Von Trier makes it very difficult to do so. Because it would defy his point!
I loved it though. Visually stunning and perfectly casted. Dunst and Gainsbourg (who manages to keep her clothes on in this one, for anyone who has seen Antichrist, haha!) were incredible, as was Stellan Skarsgaard for the small amount of time he was in it.
