The Wowster wonders if Angela Merkel is serious when she threatens to abandon Greece.
The lady’s not a bottomless pit. That’s the message coming from Angela Merkel to the Greeks if they don’t sort out their economic meltdown.
Problem is they don’t seem to be believing her. She has a very weak hand in that if she refuses to keep bailing out Greece, then the collapse of Greece will leave most of the rest of Europe fatally infected and bring on a sum zero crisis.
But if she doesn’t issue some sort of warning then Greece, staggering from one crisis to another with little sign of improvement, will keep on defying the economic laws of gravity.
To be fair, the country is in terrible shape, admittedly most of it from its own strange custom of not collecting taxes, but the fall out the people face will at the very least lead to a workers revolution which could have global repercussions even beyond Europe.
It’s a no win situation for Merkel. If she takes her finger off the dyke the entire euro zone could collapse economically. If she doesn’t, that will happen too, simply delaying the inevitable.
Perhaps the best way forward is to allow a little seepage so the Greeks can see they really do need to clean up their act or else.
Or is that wishful thinking?
The Greek game of survival…
